Job market:

• 10% of all people in paid work are self-employed (108,000) according to ministry statistics - either as sole or joint proprietors or as free-lancers. Figures are set to rise.
• Jobs subject to compulsory social security contributions: among major cities, Hamburg shares 1st place with Munich
• 49,000 registered companies paying social security for their employees (of these 44,000 are independent enterprises) have their head office in Hamburg
• The aviation industry is a major job generator in Hamburg: at present 17 leading companies have openings for qualified staff. 300 jobs were on offer at a job fair event in November

Company insolvencies:

• numbers are falling - bucking the national trend Company insolvencies in 2004 declined by 11% to 1,010 cases.
• The economy is developing better than the national average (Euler Hermes)
